The Benefits of E15

Convenience stores across the nation have recently started making one fuel more available to consumers. In 2011, NASCAR decided to take on that same fuel before it was originally released to the public – E15. This change meant that the sport was leaving racing fuel behind for a greener source and by 2016, tailpipe emissions fell 20%. After driving 15 million miles on E15, NASCAR effectively proved how beneficial the fuel can be for even the most powerful engines. Continue reading to learn more about the benefits of E15.

E15 Fuel Explained

When associated with fuel, the “E” stands for ethanol. Essentially, there are multiple blends of ethanol and gasoline that everyday vehicles may or may not be able to run on. These include E10, E15, and E85 – E15 being a mixture of 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline. This fuel, specifically, can power flexible fuel vehicles and conventional vehicles of model year 2001 and newer. E10 and E85 have their own variations of ethanol and gasoline that perform in specific vehicles as well.

More Affordable

E10 is the most commonly used fuel by consumers across the nation. Typically marked as “regular unleaded,” it is normally seen as the more affordable option at the pump. However, E15 costs less than E10 and is the less expensive option for both retailers and customers.

Higher Octane Ratings

Another reason NASCAR made the switch to E15 almost 10 years ago is the fuel’s higher octane rating. If a vehicle’s engine isn’t working properly due to its fuel, an effect called “knocking” can cause internal damage. A high octane rating means that E15 can withstand more compression before igniting, limit knocking, and provide increased amounts of horsepower.

Reduced Green House Gases

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a study which found that “greenhouse gas emissions from corn-based ethanol are about 39% lower than gasoline.” Emissions are closer to 43% lower when the ethanol is refined at natural gas-powered refineries.

Available Nationwide

According to the Renewable Fuels Association, almost 500 million gallons of E15 were sold nationwide in 2019. Previously, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) did not allow E15 to be sold throughout summer. This restriction has since been removed and the clean, low-cost fuel can be purchased year-round at retailers – including four Express Mart locations.
