How to Properly Handle Castoff Oil

People are not so different from machines. Think of those who enjoy a good workout or run. After a certain point, their bodies start to crave water. That’s how engines feel about oil – which needs to be changed every so often. But what happens to that oil afterwards and what if you are the one who has to deal with it? Let HSO walk you through how to properly handle castoff oil.

Collection Method

Let’s start off by helping you collect the used oil from your engine. Part of an oil change is securing an oil drain pan below an engine’s drain plug. This pan will need to be large enough to collect more than what the engine can hold – or you’ll have a stain on the garage floor to clean up later. Once it’s full, transfer the secondhand oil to a different container using a funnel. For this, we recommend hanging on to the bottles that your oil originally came in. Don’t forget to change the oil filter and catch that dripping oil, too!

The Storage Option

An easy option when it comes to handling used oil is to store it away. There are, however, a few checks to make before doing so. First, seal the container with a cap to ensure there are no leaks or fumes when you return. Next, label it as “old” or “used” oil to remind you exactly what is being contained. Lastly, keep it away from flammable objects and out of reach to prevent any serious injuries from occurring.

The Recycling Option

When you’re ready to clear up some space, find a location near you that can recycle oil. There are many auto shops that will accept it in its current condition if you drop it off and pour it into their collection buckets. There are also places like the Saint Louis Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Facility for hazardous waste from St. Louis County, St. Louis City, and Jefferson County. Make sure to call ahead before transporting anything.

What’s The Point?

Changing the oil in any machine will make its engine run more efficiently. However, the real point is that the same chemicals making that possible are also dangerous to the environment. According to the EPA, used oil from one oil change can contaminate one million gallons of fresh water. When oils are re-refined, they can be used for fuel again in the future. That could even include providing heat for a family in need during the winter.
